  Turning Fruit into Juice
[ top ]

Everyone has their own ideas about replacing essential body fluids, vitamins and minerals - whether it's after exercise or just a tiring day at the office. Fruit juice is still one of the best ways to replenish the body's essential nutrients and it's a natural source of energy. A ½ - ¾ cup of fruit juice is equivalent to a single fruit portion such as an apple or orange and it's rich in natural fruit sugars, (fructose, glucose, sucrose) and caffeine free.

There are four basic categories of fruit juices:

  • Pure fruit juices, which contain 100% fruit juice.

  • Fruit juice nectars , which contain less than 100% but more than 20% fruit juice, depending on the actual fruit (nectars usually contain 20-50% fruit juice).

  • Fruit drinks , which contain a minimum of 6% fruit juice.

  • Squashes contain 24% fruit juice in their undiluted form and 6% when diluted.

Instead of blending the fruit puree with other fruit juices, nectars are made by adding cane sugar and water to the fruit puree to bring it to a palatable consistency. In other words, orange nectar may consist of 50% orange juice and 50% sugar and water.

Fruit drinks follow the same principle as nectars except that a lower percentage of fruit juice is used.

The blended juices are then flash pasteurised, de-aerated and filled into sterilised packaging material. The flash pasteurisation, exclusion of air and the most up to date aseptic packaging methodology guarantee the product's shelf life of 12 months without the addition of any preservatives.

Fruitree uses Tetra Brik aseptic cartons from Tetra Pak as well as other packaging types such as cans, glass bottles and casks to package our fruit juices.

Once opened, an aseptic pack of fruit juice must be stored in the refrigerator and consumed within four to five days.

Fruitree products packed in Tetra Brik aceptic cartons, glass bottles and cans are preservative free. Products go through a pasteurisation process and are filled aseptically to render a product that is commercially sterile. Only the 5 litre cask (bag-in-box) product is preserved due to the packaging technology used.

  General information

The catch phrase of the day in the nutritional arena is to eat more fruit and vegetables and to have as wide a variety as possible. Following these two principles is critical to optimal health and disease protection.

The World Health Organisation recommends that everybody should try to eat at least five portions of different fruit and vegetables per day. A fruit portion is a single fruit, such as an apple or an orange or a glass of fruit juice. Unfortunately, most people do not consume the recommended five portions, especially as it is recommended that we include a wide variety of different fruit and vegetables every day.

Fruitree’s wide range of flavours gives you the opportunity to enjoy a variety of fruits that will not only tantalise the taste buds but also provide additional nutritional benefits.

Fruitree’s range of nectars is a food source of vitamin C and one 250 ml serving will provide more than the recommended dietary allowance for individuals older than 13 years. The pasteurisation process only contributes to a small loss of this vitamin.

Vitamin C is vital for the production of collagen, a protein needed for healthy skin, bones, cartilage, teeth and gums. It also plays an important role in healing wounds and burns.

Vitamin C improves the absorption of iron as the iron in plant food is absorbed more efficiently when these foods are accompanied by foods/juices containing vitamin C. At present much research is being undertaken into the positive role of vitamin C in the immune system and its protective role against certain cancers. A deficiency in Vitamin C can cause fatigue, loss of appetite and increased susceptibility to infections.

Fruitree’s range of nectars also supply iron and potassium to the diet. Haemoglobin, the pigment in red blood cells that carries oxygen via the bloodstream in the body, cannot be produced without iron. Potassium works with sodium to maintain the fluid and electrolyte balance in cells and tissues, regulate blood pressure and maintain a normal heartbeat. Potassium is found in most plant foods, but especially good sources in fruit are bananas and oranges.
